Electro-polishing is the electrolytic removal of metal in a highly ionic solution. This is done by means of creating or utilizing electrical potential and current. This is also known as reverse electroplating. The process of electro-polishing provides its users with decorative surfaces.
It also acts as a replacement to the bright dip. It has the ability to improve the aluminum surface before an anodizing process commences. It does this by smoothing out the peaks and valleys. Electro-polishing removes metal from surfaces. It produces a unidirectional pattern that is stress and occlusion free, microscopically smooth and highly reflective. Deburring takes place. This is done and dusted quite quickly enough.
This is owing to the higher current densities being used. Constant exposure of the burr tip is enabled. A combination of no directional lines from the mechanical finishing and a surface free of hydrogen results in a hygienically clean surface. The electro-polishing of aluminum produces no toxic fumes, nor does the process need fume hoods. It produces no corrosion, nor does it require high processing temperatures.
In order for the anodizing bath to be controlled, the aluminum metal content needs to be measured. There should be no toxicity as in the case of bright dipping aluminum that produces nitrogen dioxide. Bright dipping aluminum also requires baths to be run at higher temperatures. Not only more heat production but more money as well. The aluminum electro-polishing bath does not work on the basis that a stainless steel electro-polishing bath would either.
